Gemstone Quiz
Pearl
Laying down thin layers again and again inside a shell, you shift color softly with the angle.
A pearl is a gem that forms inside the body of a shellfish. Cells that make “nacre,” or mother-of-pearl, form a sac, and inside it they lay down hundreds or thousands of thin films, one on top of another. In pearl farming, a small bead made from shell is placed inside to start the process. In Japan, pearl farming began in the Meiji era, around the turn of the twentieth century.
When light enters those stacked layers, the light reflected from each one overlaps, creating a soft rainbow luster. Rather than sparkling strongly, it lets pink or green rise gently depending on the angle. Likewise, you adjust your shade little by little to suit the other person, and take your time shaping things on your own.
Pearls are sensitive to acid and sweat, and it's said they're best wiped with a soft cloth after wearing. Because you're good at taking in and holding other people's feelings, your luster can cloud over in places where harsh words are flying. On days like that, heading back to your own time early lets the layers start building again.
Strengths
- You can take in what someone is saying all the way to the end, without hurrying them
- You can gently adjust the warmth of your words to match the other person's mood
- You can finish things on your own, a little at a time
Where you may stumble
- While you're going along with the other person, you miss your chance to say no
- After a long time somewhere harsh words are flying, you're completely worn out
- Because you don't show anyone your work until it's done, you only find out at the end that it isn't what they had in mind
Sounds familiar, Pearl?
- The little words you use while listening are slightly different depending on who you're talking to
- You work quietly on something you were asked to do, tell no one, and one day hand over the finished thing
- You keep turning over something someone confided in you for days
Where you shine
Work that takes time to finish, or moments for listening slowly to someone's feelings. What you've built up little by little tends to show as a soft luster.
Tips for “Pearl”
- When someone asks you for something, don't answer on the spot — sleep on it: “I'll get back to you tomorrow”
- On days full of harsh words, make time to walk alone on the way home
- Before you start, line up the finished shape with the other person in a word or two

Amber — Pearl is born inside a shell and Amber from tree resin — both come into being as soft stones. You're even alike in being sensitive to heat and chemicals, so how you'd each like to be treated comes across without words.
Opal — Pearl's luster and Opal's play of color both come not from pigment, but from fine structures inside that overlap the light. While Opal colors the room in lively ways, Pearl can help brighten it too, keeping its own soft luster.
Amethyst — Pearl grows by laying down layers inside a shell over a long time. Amethyst falls into step with its companions and gets moving fast. Your sense of how long things take to come together differs, so when you work on something together, Pearl tends to feel rushed and Amethyst tends to feel kept waiting.
