About this lab

Who Am I Lab is a collection of quizzes that compare you to a tool, an animal, the weather and more, based on what you do in everyday situations.

Just for fun

These quizzes are not medical or psychological tests, and they are not validated scales. Use your result as a starting point for thinking about yourself, or as something to talk about with others. Please do not use them to judge people, or to decide on hiring or roles.

How the questions work

Instead of asking how you see yourself (“Are you a ____ person?”), we ask what you would do in a situation (“When this happens, what do you do?”). When people describe themselves, they tend to pick the self they wish they were.

Every quiz has 2–4 “axes”, and six questions mainly measure each one. Some answers add a little to another axis too. We write the choices so that none looks better or worse than the others.

How scores are calculated

For each axis, we add up the points of the choices you picked, and show where that total falls between the lowest and highest possible totals, on a scale of 0–100. 50 or more leans to the left end, 49 or less to the right end. If the total is exactly in the middle, we decide using only the six questions that mainly measure that axis, and show 49 if it goes to the right.

The combination of your leanings on every axis is your result (16 combinations with four axes). Your result page shows the answers that decided it, and the axis closest to the middle — the part that might not fit you.

Before every release we check by machine that the points are balanced, so that no result comes up far more or less often than the others when answers are random.

Your answers stay on your device

All scoring happens inside your browser. Your answers live after the “#” in the address, and that part is never sent to the server. Our analytics (Google Analytics) receive only the page address — never your answers or scores.

To compare with your previous result, your result history is kept in this browser (localStorage). Clearing your site data also clears the history.

When you share a result, only the result name and your axis scores go into the link — never which answers you picked.

You, as others see you

From your result page you can make a link for friends, who answer the same questions as if they were you. Their answers are sent to the server for scoring, but we only keep the axis scores, the result name and the date (not which choices they picked, nor the time).

You only ever see a combined summary: once three or more people answer, we show the average on each axis (in steps of 5) and any result picked by two or more people. Results picked by only one person are grouped as “others”. To keep individual answers from being worked out one by one, the summary only updates at 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 answers.

Even so, while few people have answered — or if you know who answered when — you may be able to guess whose answers are whose. Please answer knowing that full anonymity is not possible.

Your own answers are never sent to the server; the comparison happens in your browser. Links and their answers disappear after 30 days, and you can delete them at any time.
