Night Sky Quiz

Orion

Bright stars standing firmly side by side, you return to the sky in the same shape every year.

Orion is a constellation that stands out in the winter night sky. Two bright stars — red Betelgeuse and blue-white Rigel — frame the three stars of the belt in the middle, so even people who don't know constellations can pick out the shape. In Japan it has long been called tsuzumi-boshi, the “hand-drum star,” for its hourglass outline.

The shapes of the constellations barely change over a human lifetime. Orion, too, rises every winter in the same shape, from the same direction. Like Orion, you gather with familiar friends in a familiar place, and shine strongly within that circle.

Orion stands out precisely because its bright stars are grouped together. You draw strength from being with your people, so when you have to decide something alone, it can feel unfamiliar and you may waver. Keep one pleasure of your own for time alone, and you'll shine even brighter when you're back in the circle.

Strengths

  • You can bring familiar friends together and keep yearly traditions going
  • Even in a big crowd, people spot you right away
  • You keep the same promises in the same way, every time

Where you may stumble

  • When someone new joins the usual crowd, you're not sure how to act around them
  • You tend to bring decisions to your friends that you could make yourself
  • Talk of changing how a regular get-together works doesn't excite you much

Sounds familiar, Orion?

Where you shine

Regular get-togethers, stepping up in front of people as a team, and being the landmark in a big crowd.

Easy together

Pleiades — The Pleiades rise in the east a little before Orion does. They're companions in the same winter sky who get there first and warm it up for you.

Easy together

Meteor Shower — Orion keeps the same shape every year, and in autumn the Orionid meteor shower flies lively around it. The Meteor Shower brings new faces to your usual circle each season.

May clash

Comet — A Comet travels a long way on its own, and when it will come back varies. To Orion, who likes to stay in a set place with friends, it can seem like someone whose next move you can never read.
