Night Sky Quiz

Comet

You set off alone on a long journey, and drift back into the night sky when nobody's expecting you.

A comet is a small body made of ice and dust. As it nears the Sun, the ice turns to gas and sprays out gas and dust, forming a fuzzy head and a tail that stretches away from the Sun. Many comets are too faint to see with the naked eye and only glow dimly.

Comets circle the Sun on long, narrow paths, and some take decades or even centuries to return. The well-known Halley's Comet comes back about every 76 years. You, too, head off somewhere far on your own, then wander back after a while.

How bright a comet will get is hard to know until it comes close. There's a fun side to never knowing what you'll bring back — but the people around you are often left wondering, “When will we see you next?” Let them know roughly when you'll be back before you go, and the ones waiting can look forward to it.

Easy together

North Star — The North Star is always in the same place. For a Comet that travels far, someone who's always right there becomes the landmark you steer home by.

Easy together

Meteor Shower — A Comet traveling alone isn't great at throwing a lively party itself. The Meteor Shower takes the dust you leave behind and, with its friends, makes it shine.

May clash

Orion — Orion stands with the same friends in the same shape every year. A Comet appears out of nowhere on its own and then disappears. The way you each stand with others is completely opposite, which can leave both of you puzzled.
