Lily of the Valley

You line up little bells in the shade of your leaves and share your scent only with those who come near.

Lots of small flowersDraw people near with scentStart fresh each year

The lily of the valley blooms from late spring into early summer. A slender stem rises between broad leaves, and small white bell-shaped flowers hang from it in a row, facing downward. In Japan, it's often found in cool places such as Hokkaido, the northernmost main island.

Its flowers are small and bloom as though hiding in the shade of the leaves, but they have a lovely scent, and perfumes have been made to imitate it. Hard to find from far away, its scent reaches anyone who comes close. You're the kind of person who quietly brings many small things to the people beside you.

Its underground stems survive from year to year, but the leaves die back in winter, and in spring new shoots come up again from those stems. You can start afresh each year. But because you're so understated, people far away may not see what you're doing, and by the time you notice, an important discussion may already be settled.
