Flower Quiz
Cosmos
You grow from seed every year, swaying lots of flowers in all different colors at the tips of slender stems.
The cosmos is an autumn-flowering plant; in Japanese it can be written with characters meaning “autumn cherry blossom.” It originally comes from Mexico, and is said to have reached Japan in the Meiji era (1868–1912). It grows from seed sown from spring to summer, and as the days get shorter, it starts to form buds. It's an annual: after flowering it dies, and the next year starts over again from seed.
From a single plant, slender stems branch out, each tipped with pink, white or red flowers. Its scent is faint, and it catches the eye with a spread of color. A field of cosmos swaying in the wind is easy to spot from far away. You're the kind of person who starts on many things a little at a time and spreads them out where people can see.
Cosmos are said to put out roots from partway up the stem and stand back up even after the wind knocks them over. You can start from a brand-new seed every year — you travel light. But because you keep starting new things, you may leave behind people who were looking forward to carrying on from last year.
