Instrument Quiz
Flute
With a clear, airy tone, you gently lift the melody out from among many.
The flute makes its sound when you blow across the mouthpiece. Most are made of metal today, but it's counted among the woodwinds. Its clear, high sound rises above the other instruments and carries farther than you might expect.
In orchestras and concert bands, the flute often carries the melody in the high range. Its clear sound comes alive most when it's supported by the sounds around it, rather than played alone. Without raising your voice, you play your part properly among your companions.
In its low range, though, the flute's sound grows thin and is easily lost in a loud band. In a room full of loud voices, your words tend to get lost the same way. When you have something to get across, pick a moment when the room goes quiet, or go right up to the person, and it will reach them.

Piano — Flute and piano is a common duo. The Piano builds the whole structure, so the Flute can focus on the melody.
Harp — When the Harp's shimmering chords spread out below, the Flute can let its breath out long and thin and keep the melody floating. Mozart even wrote a concerto pairing the two.
Trumpet — In a concert band, the Flute's sound is easily buried when the Trumpet plays. When the two share the same melody, the gap in force can leave them unsure of each other.
