Instrument Quiz
Trumpet
With a bright, carrying sound, you stand at the front of the crowd and give the signal: “Here we go.”
The trumpet is a brass instrument played by buzzing your lips into it. Its high, bright sound carries a long way, and it has long been used for fanfares and signals. You're often the one who speaks up first when people gather and sets the direction for everyone.
In concert bands and orchestras, there are plenty of passages where the trumpet carries the melody. But rather than playing on its own for long, it shines most when lots of other instruments are layered behind it. Your energy, too, rings out loudest when your whole crew is there.
A sound that carries so well can be too much in a quiet piece. The trumpet has a tool called a mute that softens its sound. If you find ways to bring your volume down a notch to fit the room, you'll reach even more people.
Strengths
- In a big group, you can speak up first and get things flowing
- Once you've decided “Let's do it,” you can bring the people around you along
- You can speak clearly enough to reach even the people at the back
Where you may stumble
- Even with someone who'd like to talk quietly, you speak at your usual volume
- When you have a long stretch of solo work, it's easy to lose your drive
- Your voice comes out first, making it harder to hear what others think
Sounds familiar, Trumpet?
- When you're on the phone, people in another room can hear every word
- At the meeting spot, you're the first one waving big
- Looking back at group photos, your mouth is open in almost all of them
Where you shine
The start of an event, moments when a big group needs to move in the same direction, or when a low mood needs to be turned around with one word.
Tips for “Trumpet”
- Before you start talking, look at the size of the room and the number of people, and set your volume to match
- At the end of a get-together, toss a word to someone who hasn't spoken before you wrap up
- For solo work, promise to tell someone “Done!” when you finish

Tuba — A fellow brass instrument: in a concert band, the two split into the high melody and the low foundation. The more the Tuba holds things up from below, the more freely the Trumpet can play out.
Double Bass — The Double Bass keeps the beat down low no matter how many sounds pile up. Knowing the foundation behind it won't wobble, the Trumpet can step out in front with confidence.
Ocarina — The Ocarina plays melodies with a small, soft sound, even on its own. When the Trumpet sounds beside it, the Ocarina is easily drowned out, and the gap in volume leaves both unsure what to do.
