Yokai Quiz
Kappa (River Imp)
You poke your head up out of a river or pool and, just as you are, invite people to a sumo match.
The kappa is a yokai said to live in rivers and marshes. The dish-like hollow on top of its head, the shell on its back and its webbed hands and feet are shared by many legends, even where the details differ from place to place. Its favorite food is said to be cucumber, and that's said to be why the cucumber sushi roll is called a “kappa maki.”
Tales from many regions say the kappa loves sumo wrestling and challenges people passing along the riverbank to a match. You step out in front of people yourself and take them on head-on, in your own usual way. There's even a story that when someone bowed before a match, the kappa politely bowed back, spilled the water from the dish on its head, and lost all its strength.
In many stories, the kappa is tied to a particular river or pool. In places like Kyushu, some legends say it goes up into the mountains in autumn to become a “yamawaro” and comes back to the river in spring. You're someone who feels free outdoors, by the water or in the hills. But in front of someone your usual way doesn't work on, you can lose steam, as if the dish on your head had dried out.
Strengths
- You can call out to people you know and invite them to play without a second thought
- Whoever you're dealing with, you can face them squarely without changing your ways
- When it comes to playing in the river or outdoors, you're the first to dive in
Where you may stumble
- Once there's a contest, you get fired up and go all out even when the other person is just playing
- Where your usual way doesn't work, you're not sure how to move
- After several days cooped up indoors, you start getting restless
Sounds familiar, Kappa (River Imp)?
- The moment arm wrestling comes up, wherever you are, your sleeves are already rolled up
- When you lose a friendly game, “One more round!” goes on at least three times
- Whenever you see a river or pond, you start looking for flat stones to skip
Where you shine
On days when you can go head-to-head outdoors — playing in the river or at an outdoor sports day — the Kappa's strength comes through most directly.
Tips for “Kappa (River Imp)”
- Before you issue a challenge, ask once: “For fun, or for real?”
- When your way isn't working, take a break — like topping up the water in your dish — before going back
- Keep one thing you enjoy doing indoors for rainy days when you can't go out
Matches

Tengu (Mountain Goblin) — The Tengu is said to live in the mountains, and the Kappa in the rivers. You both make your homes in the outdoors, but mountain and river are clearly separate places, so your territories never overlap and you can trade stories about worlds the other doesn't know.
Rokurokubi (Long-Necked Yokai) — The Rokurokubi lives indoors in the village, using a different face with each person. It's the opposite of the Kappa, who takes people on by the water just as it is, in every way — and precisely because of that, you never compete, and you each find the other's stories fascinating.
Yamabiko (Mountain Echo) — The Yamabiko only sends your own voice back when you call, and never shows itself. The Kappa, who wants to grab hold and say “Let's wrestle!”, can never get a real grip on it, and to the Yamabiko, the Kappa's challenges are so direct it isn't sure how to answer.
