Yokai Quiz compatibility chart
For each of the 8 yokai, two that are easy to be with and one that may clash. A clash does not mean either side is wrong — they simply value different things.
Bake-danuki (Shape-shifting Raccoon Dog)
- Easy together Zashiki-warashi (House Spirit) A house with a Zashiki-warashi is said to prosper. If the Tanuki livens up the village out front while the Zashiki-warashi quietly settles into the back of the house, the good times don't end after one night — they carry on for a long while.
- Easy together Kasa-obake (Umbrella Spirit) The Kasa-obake also loves to hop out in front of people and give them a fright. The Tanuki surprises by transforming, the umbrella by showing up just as it is — so even though you both like to surprise people, your acts don't overlap, and you can enjoy watching each other's turn.
- May clash Tengu (Mountain Goblin) The Tengu stays out of sight deep in the mountains and lives by its own unchanging ways. To the Tengu, the Tanuki's habit of transforming in front of a crowd can look flippant, and to the Tanuki, the Tengu's silence makes it hard to know where the laugh is.
Ittan-momen (Flying Cloth)
- Easy together Kasa-obake (Umbrella Spirit) The Kasa-obake is also an everyday object come to life — paper and bamboo instead of cloth. You're both yokai born from familiar things, and you both go right up to people, so you can swap stories about the frights you've given for as long as you like.
- Easy together Yamabiko (Mountain Echo) The Yamabiko also lives under the wide open sky of hills and mountains, changing its voice to answer whoever calls. You both change your shape or your voice out in the open, so you naturally fall into the same rhythm when you play.
- May clash Zashiki-warashi (House Spirit) The Zashiki-warashi wants to stay deep inside the house, just as it always is, felt more than seen. The Ittan-momen sweeps in from the open sky right up to people — you want to be in opposite places and show yourselves in opposite ways, so it's hard to find somewhere you're both comfortable.
Kasa-obake (Umbrella Spirit)
- Easy together Ittan-momen (Flying Cloth) The Ittan-momen swoops down from the open sky right up to people. The umbrella hops around town and the cloth dances through the air — you both step out in front of people, but in different places, so you never compete for the spotlight and can share your best surprise stories.
- Easy together Zashiki-warashi (House Spirit) The Zashiki-warashi also stays as it is, in the form of a child, without disguising itself. Neither of you puts on a face, so you're at ease together — and even under the same roof, it naturally splits into the umbrella who jumps out and the house spirit who watches from the back.
- May clash Rokurokubi (Long-Necked Yokai) The Rokurokubi lives as an ordinary person by day and stretches its neck only at night. The Kasa-obake, who always pops out just as it is, finds it hard to follow that switching, and to the Rokurokubi, an umbrella that acts the same everywhere can seem not to read the room.
Kappa (River Imp)
- Easy together Tengu (Mountain Goblin) The Tengu is said to live in the mountains, and the Kappa in the rivers. You both make your homes in the outdoors, but mountain and river are clearly separate places, so your territories never overlap and you can trade stories about worlds the other doesn't know.
- Easy together Rokurokubi (Long-Necked Yokai) The Rokurokubi lives indoors in the village, using a different face with each person. It's the opposite of the Kappa, who takes people on by the water just as it is, in every way — and precisely because of that, you never compete, and you each find the other's stories fascinating.
- May clash Yamabiko (Mountain Echo) The Yamabiko only sends your own voice back when you call, and never shows itself. The Kappa, who wants to grab hold and say “Let's wrestle!”, can never get a real grip on it, and to the Yamabiko, the Kappa's challenges are so direct it isn't sure how to answer.
Rokurokubi (Long-Necked Yokai)
- Easy together Yamabiko (Mountain Echo) The Yamabiko also stays out of sight, matching its voice to whoever calls. You're both good at fitting in, so you can sense each other without needing to say anything. For a Rokurokubi who lives in town, hearing about the voices in the mountains makes a nice change of pace.
- Easy together Zashiki-warashi (House Spirit) The Zashiki-warashi also lives quietly in people's homes. Neither of you steps out front, and you both live indoors in the village, so you don't disturb each other's peace under the same roof. You can quietly fill it in on what you saw outside when you stretched your neck at night.
- May clash Kasa-obake (Umbrella Spirit) The Kasa-obake pops out anywhere, just as it is. To a Rokurokubi who moves only after seeing how things are, that way of jumping out is a bit dazzling, and to the umbrella, the Rokurokubi seems to spend all its time watching and never come out.
Yamabiko (Mountain Echo)
- Easy together Tengu (Mountain Goblin) The Tengu also stays unseen deep in the mountains, letting the sounds it makes say it's there. You both love the same mountain stillness, so you leave each other be and share the feel of the mountains.
- Easy together Rokurokubi (Long-Necked Yokai) The Rokurokubi is also good at fitting in, changing its form to blend into a place. When the Rokurokubi, who lives in town, tells you what it saw with its neck stretched out, the Yamabiko can listen well and answer in the very same tone.
- May clash Kappa (River Imp) The Kappa wants to grab hold on the riverbank and say “Let's wrestle!” To a Yamabiko who only sends back voices and never shows itself, that invitation is so direct it doesn't know how to answer, and to the Kappa, the Yamabiko seems like someone who will never step in and wrestle.
Zashiki-warashi (House Spirit)
- Easy together Bake-danuki (Shape-shifting Raccoon Dog) The Zashiki-warashi with its noises around the house and the Bake-danuki with its belly drum both make themselves known by sound before they're seen. You both settle in among people, so just hearing each other at night is enough to tell how the other is doing.
- Easy together Rokurokubi (Long-Necked Yokai) The Rokurokubi also lives quietly in people's homes. Neither of you steps out front, so you can share a roof without fuss, and you can get along in the same easy way with both the face the Rokurokubi shows by day and the one it shows at night.
- May clash Ittan-momen (Flying Cloth) The Ittan-momen sweeps down from the open sky right up to people and changes shape with the wind. To a Zashiki-warashi who wants to stay in the back of the house as it always is, that way of showing up is unsettling, and to the Ittan-momen, it's a mystery why the Zashiki-warashi stays in the same room forever.
Tengu (Mountain Goblin)
- Easy together Kappa (River Imp) The Kappa, always in the same river, ready to challenge you head-on to a sumo match — for a Tengu up in the mountains, it's someone who'll greet you in the same old way whenever you come down. Neither of you bends your ways, so even your matches end cleanly.
- Easy together Yamabiko (Mountain Echo) The Yamabiko also stays unseen deep in the mountains and lets only its voice say it's there. You both make yourselves known by sound before you're seen, so you can understand each other in the mountains without exchanging many words.
- May clash Bake-danuki (Shape-shifting Raccoon Dog) The highlight of Bake-danuki stories is the way it changes form for each person in the village to get a laugh. To a Tengu who wants to master one skill in the mountains in its own way, that ever-changing approach is hard to follow, and to the Tanuki, the Tengu seems like someone who won't play along with a joke.
