Sea Creature Quiz
Ocean Sunfish
You lie boldly on your side at the surface of the open sea, roaming the wide ocean in your own way of swimming.
The ocean sunfish is a big fish of the open sea. Its body is flat and looks as if the back half has been cut off, and instead of a tail fin it has a fin called a “clavus.” It swims in a leisurely way by sweeping its tall dorsal and anal fins, which stick up and down, from side to side.
Ocean sunfish dive deep to feed, but they're also often seen floating on their sides near the surface. It's said this may be to warm up their chilled bodies, or to let seabirds pick parasites off them. You roam the sea at your own pace, letting yourself be seen rather than hiding.
Despite its relaxed look, the ocean sunfish is also said to travel long distances across the wide ocean. But because you don't change the way you swim, when the current around you suddenly shifts, it can take you a while to adjust. When you sense the current has changed, check by saying it out loud once, and you'll miss each other less.

Shark — The Shark also roams the open sea without changing how it swims. The Ocean Sunfish floats in plain view and the Shark swims unnoticed — different ways of showing up, but you can come and go in the same sea without commenting on each other's pace.
Anglerfish — Like you, the Anglerfish lets itself be seen and draws others in without changing its own way of doing things. For the Anglerfish, holding its spot on the seafloor, the Ocean Sunfish, roaming the open sea as it pleases, is someone who tells it stories of distant waters in its own easy rhythm.
Octopus — The Octopus hides in cracks in the rocks and changes both its color and its shape to match its surroundings. The Ocean Sunfish, roaming the open sea in plain view and in its own style, does everything the other way around. To the Ocean Sunfish, the Octopus's quick changes are hard to read; to the Octopus, the Ocean Sunfish's go-my-own-way style can look too bold.
