Season Quiz
Autumn
You bring what you've grown to fruit, close at hand, and finish it carefully, one piece at a time.
Autumn is the season when the rice and trees that sprouted in spring and grew in summer bear fruit. Harvested rice is hung to dry and nuts are stored away as the year's harvest is gathered in. You, too, finish what's been started and take your time checking what's inside it.
In Japan people speak of “autumn, the season for reading,” and as the nights grow longer, autumn is a good time to settle down and give your full attention to one thing. Rather than dabbling widely, you deepen the one thing in front of you and only say “done” once every detail is in order. The way you work is a lot like how this season is spent.
Leaves change color before they fall. When the hillsides turn, it's also a sign that the year's cycle is nearing its end. Your hands, too, are at their sharpest once the end comes into view. Because of that, when something is just getting started, you may seem a little quieter than others.
Strengths
- You can finish what was left halfway, all the way
- You notice small gaps and unevenness in the finish
- You can take time to check one thing deeply
Where you may stumble
- When talk turns to starting something new, what's already in your hands is on your mind and you can't quite get on board
- The details bother you, so it takes ages to hang up the “done” sign
- While you're perfecting the details, the deadline creeps closer
Sounds familiar, Autumn?
- You read books right through to the afterword
- You can't relax until you've solved the last question in a workbook or puzzle
- When cleaning up after a get-together, you even check the trash has been sorted properly
Where you shine
Bringing something you've kept up for a long time together into finished form, and the final stage where careful checking is needed. Like cutting ripe rice one bundle at a time, you can gather in everything you've built up without dropping a thing.
Tips for “Autumn”
- Before you start, draw the line: “When it reaches here, it's finished”
- If your hands stop partway through finishing, make just one tiny fix
- Rather than turning down a new idea, answer with a time: “Once this is done”

Summer — Summer sees things through to the end with lots of people. Even something too big for Autumn to carry alone, Summer gathers people and carries it to the finish, leaving Autumn free to focus on the final details.
Winter — Winter also spends time quietly, within. Winter doesn't drag you out somewhere noisy; it lets each of you get absorbed in your own work, so being together takes no effort. By the time Autumn has finished, Winter has already started the next thing, so you never run out of things to talk about.
Spring — Spring heads outward and wants to start one new thing after another. When Autumn is still tending its harvest and gets invited to “do this next,” it can feel rushed.
