White Birch

First to spring up on open ground, you rest in winter and change shape to meet what the people around you need.

The white birch is a deciduous tree with eye-catching white bark that grows mostly in cold regions; Japan's own is the Japanese white birch, or shirakaba. It's known for springing up before other trees on sunny, open ground, such as land cleared by a forest fire or logging.

Birch roots are said to spread shallow and wide. Rather than firming up preparations in advance, you tend to move into a space as soon as it opens up and put down roots on the spot. And just as the tree drops its leaves in winter, when you rest, you clearly rest.

Birch wood is soft and easy to work, so it has been used for disposable chopsticks, ice cream sticks and furniture, and its oily bark burns well, making it good kindling. You can switch roles one after another to fit what people around you need. But while answering calls from every direction, you can miss the chance to stay with one thing for a long time.

Strengths

  • You can start on whatever's open without waiting for everything to be ready
  • You can change roles to fit the shape that's asked of you
  • You make a clear time for rest, then start the next season full of energy

Where you may stumble

  • You're first in, but without enough preparation you get bogged down
  • Answering everyone's needs, the things you want to keep doing get interrupted
  • Once you go into rest mode, you tend to go quiet on messages

Sounds familiar, White Birch?

Where you shine

Getting a new group off the ground, or filling a role that has suddenly opened up. Your lightness in jumping in first is often welcome.

Easy together

Ginkgo — The Ginkgo also rests in winter and adapts to others like its soft wood. When the Ginkgo, who prepares ahead, lays the groundwork, the White Birch, who jumps in first, doesn't get stuck without what it needs.

Easy together

Japanese Maple — The Japanese Maple also rests in winter and puts down roots wherever it lands. Taking a cue from the Maple, which keeps its core wherever it goes, the Birch, prone to answering every call, finds it easier to stay with one thing for a long time.

May clash

Evergreen Oak — The Evergreen Oak keeps the same pace all year, prepares ahead and holds a hard shape. With the White Birch, which rests with the seasons, jumps in on the spot and changes its shape, their ways of moving tend to run in opposite directions at every turn.
