Tree Quiz
Evergreen Oak
Leafy all year, with deep roots and a hard trunk, you take the wind head-on without changing your shape.
Kashi is the Japanese name for a group of evergreen oaks — acorn-bearing trees that keep their leaves all year round. Their wood is among the hardest of any tree, and the character used to write kashi is said to have been made from the characters for “tree” and “hard.” It has long gone into tool handles, the bodies of wood planes and wooden practice swords.
Because these oaks put down deep roots and stand up well to wind, some parts of Japan, such as the Kanto region around Tokyo, have planted them around homesteads as a shield against strong winter winds. You keep things going at the same steady pace whatever the season or your mood, and you shore up your defenses before anything happens.
Oak's hardness proves its worth in tools that have to take heavy force. In the same way, your “usual way” is relied on most when everything around you is shaky. But when someone suddenly asks you to change shape, it can take you a while to say yes.
Strengths
- You can keep things going at the same pace, whatever the weather or your mood
- You think about what might happen and have something ready ahead of time
- Even under pressure from others, you can hold to the way you've decided on
Where you may stumble
- When plans change suddenly, it takes you a while to rearrange everything
- Busy getting ready, you miss out on the fun happening right in front of you
- While sticking to your own way, you can miss hearing other ideas

- Your watch and wallet are the same ones you had years ago
- Things you took along “just in case” often come home unused
- Somehow you end up keeping exactly the same number of bottles of emergency water stocked every year

Getting ready before a typhoon, or a duty that runs for a long time. Your ability to keep holding things up at the same pace is what people come to lean on.

Zelkova — Like the Evergreen Oak, the Zelkova roots deeply and has hard wood, and the two are sometimes planted side by side around homes. While the Zelkova rests through the winter, the Oak, unchanged all year, can carry on at its own pace and see it through that quiet season.
Japanese Cedar — The Japanese Cedar is also green all year and deep-rooted, a tree grown with an eye to decades ahead. The Cedar takes care of the fine details of what's asked while the Oak holds the overall shape, so with the two of you, the division of work falls into place naturally.
White Birch — The White Birch springs up early on open ground and nimbly changes its shape to suit what's there. With the Evergreen Oak, which wants to prepare ahead and keep its shape, both when to start moving and how to change tend not to line up.
