Book Genre Quiz

Fantasy

You build one world in your mind down to the last detail, and take your time journeying ever deeper into it.

ImaginingDeep on one thingSlow and savoring

Fantasy is the genre of stories set in worlds that don't exist in reality, with magic, dragons, imaginary kingdoms and so on. In longer tales, the world's maps, history and even languages are worked out in detail, and it's common to find a map at the front of the book.

Fantasy often imagines a single world and goes deeper into it over several books. You love imagining things that aren't in front of you, and once you've stepped into a world, you take your time and stay with it.

Because you build one world so thoroughly, the world in your head can become so vivid that your story races ahead before others can follow. When you tell people about it, they may ask, “Wait, where is this?” Just as a fantasy book hands you a map at the start, add a word about the background first, and others can step into the same world more easily.

Strengths

  • You can picture things that aren't in front of you, right down to the details
  • You can stay with one thing for a long time
  • You can build up rules and settings without them falling apart

Where you may stumble

  • You skip the background in your head when you talk, and leave people behind
  • When reality differs from what you pictured, it takes you a while to adjust
  • While you're immersed in a world you love, the time you'd agreed on creeps up

Sounds familiar, Fantasy?

Where you shine

Sketching the big picture of something that doesn't exist yet, or working out the path of a long-term plan. That's your cue to picture what isn't there yet.

Easy together

History — History is another genre that immerses itself slowly in one era. To the world Fantasy imagines, History brings the texture of times that really existed. The world you've built suddenly feels much more real.

Easy together

Poetry — Poetry, too, uses words to picture things that aren't in front of you. The world Fantasy paints in a long tale, Poetry lights up in a single line. You both enjoy imagining, and you can take your time together.

May clash

Travel Writing — Travel Writing is a genre that goes in person and checks out one new place after another. To Fantasy, which wants to stay long in one world, Travel Writing's constant moving on feels too fast, and to Travel Writing, Fantasy's “world that doesn't exist yet” can be hard to grasp.
