Book Genre Quiz
Mystery
You sink your teeth into one puzzle and race ahead, picturing the plot from just a few clues.
Mystery is the genre of stories in which a crime or a puzzle comes up and is gradually unraveled. A detective figure picks up clues scattered through the story and reveals the answer at the end. These books are made so that readers, too, can reason along with the detective as they read.
Mysteries are often named as the classic example of books you can't stop reading because you need to know what happens next. Even before the answer is revealed, readers picture the plot — “It must be this” — and press on. You're the kind of person who imagines the answer you can't see yet and moves briskly toward one puzzle.
Because you head straight for the answer, it can be hard to get interested in what happens along the way or in detours. Even when listening to someone, you may want to skip ahead: “So how did it turn out?” Listen as if there were clues hidden in the part before the ending too, and you'll have one more thing to enjoy.
Strengths
- You can picture a plot that isn't visible yet from just a few clues
- You can focus on one thing and get it done in one go
- You can think up several ways things might play out: “What if…?”
Where you may stumble
- You jump ahead and say the ending of other people's stories for them
- Once one puzzle is on your mind, you can't focus on anything else
- Stories that end without an answer leave you unsettled
Sounds familiar, Mystery?
- From just the trailer for a show, you've pictured several possible endings
- From one offhand remark, you spin up a whole backstory on your own
- When the person you're meeting is running late, you imagine several reasons why
Where you shine
Thinking about where a story with no visible ending is going, or following events you're eager to see play out. Reading a whole plot from a few clues, you may be the first to say “Wait, could it be…?”
Tips for “Mystery”
- Even if you've guessed the ending, don't say it until the other person has finished
- Before getting absorbed in one thing, set a time for your other errands
- Enjoy conversations with no answer too, by drawing a line: “That's it for today”

Field Guide — When Mystery pictures the answer from the clues — “It must be this” — Field Guide wants to lay out what hasn't been looked at yet and check, “What about the other possibilities?” The speed of picturing and pressing on and the care of checking tend to clash.
