Stationery Quiz
Mechanical Pencil
One click gives you lead of the same fine width, and you keep moving forward, writing and casually fixing as you go.
A mechanical pencil is a writing tool that pushes out a thin lead a little at a time with each click. There's no sharpening, as there is with a pencil, so you can always draw a line of the same width straight away. Leads 0.5 mm thick are widely used.
The lead is made with graphite, just like a pencil's, so what you write can be erased. Plenty of mechanical pencils even have a small eraser tucked under the click button. Write it down the moment it comes to you, erase it and rewrite it the moment it's wrong — that lightness lets you give shape to one idea after another.
Unlike a pencil, whose line changes with how you sharpen it, a mechanical pencil draws a set width no matter who uses it. Because you can use it as it is without second-guessing, you can focus on the thinking itself. But thin lead snaps when you press too hard — and when you try to put something too forcefully, the conversation can snap in the same way.
Strengths
- You can quickly turn an idea into something you can show
- When something turns out to be wrong, you can fix it without fuss
- Using set methods and tools just as they are, you can come up with draft after draft
Where you may stumble
- Thinking you can always rewrite it, you tend to put off deciding
- A suggestion you made lightly gets taken as final, and wires get crossed
- When someone pushes back hard on an idea you've put out, you withdraw it right away
Sounds familiar, Mechanical Pencil?
- When you're thinking something over, you click your pen over and over
- After sending three restaurant ideas, you withdraw one yourself
- You say your ideas out loud first and think about them afterward
Where you shine
When someone needs a rough first draft, or wherever things can be fixed the moment they're off, the Mechanical Pencil's light start is a real help.
Tips for “Mechanical Pencil”
- When you say something is “just for now,” say when you'll decide, too
- When you feel like putting something forcefully, keep it short — as if pushing out just a little lead
- Write down at least one of the ideas you erased instead of throwing it away
Matches

Eraser — A Mechanical Pencil often has a small Eraser tucked into its top. Writing and fixing comes naturally to you both, so you can laugh off mistakes and fix them together.
Sticky Note — The Sticky Note, too, gets jotted on, stuck down, and peeled off any time. With the Mechanical Pencil wanting to give ideas shape right away and the Sticky Note ready to be moved at a moment's notice, you can enjoy the stage before anything is decided, without any pressure.
Glue — Glue spreads itself evenly by its own touch, and once it sticks, it doesn't let go. To the Mechanical Pencil, who'd like to rewrite as many times as it takes, that once-and-for-all weight feels confining, and to Glue, the Mechanical Pencil's “just for now” can seem unsettled.
