Ballpoint Pen
Anyone can pick you up and get the same line right away — and you stand by what you've written instead of erasing it.
A ballpoint pen has a tiny metal ball set into its tip. As the ball rolls across the paper, it transfers the ink inside the barrel to the page, a little at a time. Click the button or pull off the cap, and anyone can start writing the same way.
What you write with a ballpoint pen can't be removed with an ordinary eraser. That's why official forms so often ask you to fill them in with a pen. You put what you're thinking into words on the spot, and once you've said something, you don't take it back — you own it.
Borrow the pen at a shop counter or a reception desk, and it usually writes just fine. Being useful in the same way anywhere, just as it is, is what the ballpoint pen does best. But the words can't be changed afterward. Something decided in the heat of the moment can end up as the rule, so for the words that really matter, it's worth pausing for a breath before you write.
Strengths
- You can put what comes to mind into words and get it across on the spot
- You can stand by what you've said without reversing it later
- Even with borrowed tools or somewhere unfamiliar, you can work just as well as usual
Where you may stumble
- A plan you mentioned on impulse ends up being the plan
- Even when there's something you'd like to rephrase, it gets hard to bring it up
- Even when doing it your own way would work better, you keep going exactly as things are set up
Sounds familiar, Ballpoint Pen?
- Whatever freebie pen you're handed, you use it without complaint, the same as any other
- You've replied so quickly that someone asked, “Did you actually read it?”
- There's a pen from somewhere or other in your jacket pocket
Where you shine
When something has to be written down and settled right there — paperwork at a counter, signing in at reception — the Ballpoint Pen's reliability comes into its own.
Tips for “Ballpoint Pen”
- For important replies, read them through once before you send
- Before you start talking, narrow down what you want to say to one thing
- Once in a while, change just one part of your usual routine to suit yourself
Matches

Stapler — The Stapler also fastens with a single snap, and what it fastens stays fastened. When the Stapler binds the pages the Ballpoint Pen has written as soon as they're done, decisions take shape without getting scattered.
Sticky Note — The Sticky Note is the easiest place for the Ballpoint Pen's quick scribbles to land. You both work the same way no matter who's using you, so there's nothing to explain, and you can team up right away.
Eraser — The Eraser, who'd happily redo things again and again, is no match for ballpoint ink. To the Ballpoint Pen, who wants to write and decide, the Eraser's “Let's look at it one more time” looks like stalling, and to the Eraser, the Ballpoint Pen tends to look like it's rushing.
