Konpeito (Star-Shaped Sugar Candy)

Like konpeito that grows its points over many days, you're bright and colorful whenever people see you.

DecorativeCrispYear-round

Konpeito is a sugar candy brought to Japan from Portugal in the sixteenth century, during the Warring States period, and its name comes from Portuguese too. A tiny core is coated again and again with sugar syrup in a large, constantly rotating pan, so the points on its surface grow little by little. Made the traditional way, it's said to take many days.

You come across as bright and colorful whenever people see you. You don't change your tone with the seasons or the latest trends; you keep your own colors. Your way with people is light and crisp, and you'd rather see people just often enough than stick by their side for long stretches.

Konpeito's points aren't made in a day. Your unchanging brightness, too, is built up from small things done every day. But because you always seem equally bright, people don't easily notice when you're having an off day. On those days, try putting it into words: “I'm going to be a bit quiet today.”

Strengths

  • You can greet people with the same bright air whenever they see you
  • You can take your time growing a shape that's your own
  • You can keep things light with lots of people, at a comfortable distance

Where you may stumble

  • You always look equally bright, so people don't notice your off days
  • Because you keep things light, people are less likely to come to you with complicated problems
  • It's hard to line up plans with people who organize their lives around seasonal events

Sounds familiar, Konpeito (Star-Shaped Sugar Candy)?

Where you shine

Gatherings of people meeting for the first time, or casual get-togethers on an ordinary day. Your unchanging brightness tends to lighten the mood.

Easy together

Senbei (Rice Cracker) — Senbei is unadorned and always the same with people. They look nothing alike, but both have a steady tone and a light touch, so Konpeito can see Senbei for years without having to make an effort.

Easy together

Nerikiri (Shaped Bean-Paste Sweet) — Nerikiri changes its form each season to add color to a place. For Konpeito, who always wears the same colors, Nerikiri's seasonal touches are hints for adding new shades to its own brightness.

May clash

Kashiwa Mochi (Oak-Leaf Rice Cake) — Kashiwa Mochi is unadorned and firmly ties its bonds with people at each seasonal milestone. Konpeito wants to meet lightly at any time, while Kashiwa Mochi wants to spend real time together at each milestone. They differ in when to meet and how deep to go, and each finds it hard to gauge how the other does friendship.
