Bird Quiz
Black Kite
Riding the wind in wide circles over familiar skies, you call out in a high, carrying voice.
The black kite is a large bird commonly seen over towns, coasts and rivers in Japan, where it's also known by the nickname “tonbi.” Most black kites in Japan don't migrate, living in the same area all year. The end of its tail is shaped like the fan-shaped plectrum used to play the shamisen, a Japanese three-stringed instrument, which makes it easy to pick out when you look up.
Once a black kite catches a rising current, it circles wide with barely a wingbeat. It looks out over the ground from up high, and when it spots food, it glides smoothly down. There's even a Japanese saying, “to have your fried tofu snatched by a kite,” for losing something to someone out of nowhere. Your style is to bide your time and move when it counts.
Its high, whistling “pee-hyoro-ro” carries a long way. You're someone who lets people know where you are with your voice, under familiar skies. But because your voice carries even while you're still waiting, word can get around that you haven't moved yet.

Crane — The Crane, who arrives in winter, tells you about northern lands the Black Kite has never seen, in a ringing voice. You both ride the wind as you soar, so you also see eye to eye on how to pick the day to set off.
Condor — The Condor and the Black Kite both soar on rising air, and both play a part in cleaning up by eating the remains of dead animals. The Kite lets others know with its voice, and the Condor answers with gestures. A quiet partner who can wait for the same moment.
Hummingbird — The Hummingbird flaps nonstop all the way to faraway places and keeps moving without a word. To the Black Kite, who waits for the wind under the same sky and speaks up, the Hummingbird's rapid pace seems restless — and to the Hummingbird, the Kite's waiting seems to go on forever.
