Drink Quiz
Black Coffee
Like coffee brewed one cup at a time, you take things step by step with one person at a time.
When you make pour-over coffee by hand, you first pour just a little hot water onto the grounds and let them bloom for a moment, then add the rest in several pours. It's a drink you tune one cup at a time, with the person who'll drink it in mind. When you start on something, you tend to build up the same way — gradually, step by step.
The taste of coffee changes with where the beans were grown, how dark the roast is, how fine the grind is and how hot the water is. Black, with no sugar or milk, is the way to drink it where those differences come through most clearly. You don't add anything extra either, and check one by one what works for the person in front of you.
Because it's made one cup at a time, serving lots of people at once takes effort. Your hands, too, are better suited to one person or one task than to moving a whole group along. In a big crowd, you can look like you're moving a little more slowly than everyone else.
Strengths
- You can go deep on something by taking it one careful step at a time
- You can change how you talk or teach to suit one particular person
- You can calmly get across just the key points, without dressing them up
Where you may stumble
- While you're getting your own steps in order, the conversation around you has moved on
- When you're handed the job of moving a big group along, you run out of hands
- Explaining things to each person separately means it takes longer to reach everyone
Sounds familiar, Black Coffee?
- When sending directions to a meeting spot, you write a separate version for each direction people might come from
- When lending someone a pen, you pick the one that looks easiest for them to write with
- Your messages saying a task is done are short and stick to the essentials
Where you shine
Spending real time with one person, or teaching something while checking what works for them. Just as you don't skimp on letting the coffee bloom, you can take things step by step and go deep.
Tips for “Black Coffee”
- In a big group, decide on one thing you'll take charge of first
- Build time for getting your steps in order into your schedule ahead of time
- When everyone needs the same information, try writing it up once and handing it out

Green Tea — Green Tea is also drunk with nothing added. While Black Coffee is taking care with each person, Green Tea keeps an eye on everyone together, so between you, you can reach both small groups and big ones.
Cocoa — Cocoa is also made one cup at a time, with care. You both value the steps, and Cocoa adds a gentle bit of fun to Black Coffee's matter-of-fact way of doing things.
Lemonade — Lemonade wants to share a pitcher full of sweet-tart fun with everyone, fast. Black Coffee wants to brew one cup at a time, with nothing added, to suit each person. Hurry or wait, add or don't, share around or focus on one — you're opposite on every count, so in the same room, each of your approaches can look roundabout to the other.
